Butterfly Farm
Description
The resident otter and the hairless guinea pigs nicknamed “pygmy hippos” will steal the headlines, but Butterfly Farm is really a compact rescue farm with a surprisingly good jungle lesson attached. Expect injured wildlife, rabbits, birds, farm animals and a lot of plants growing with purpose.
A guided walk explains local fruit, pineapple, rice, mushrooms, sponge plants and whatever else is flourishing that week. The family know their patch of Koh Lanta inside out, so it lands somewhere between an animal encounter and a small-scale farming crash course – with fewer laminated signs and more actual leaves.
Children get plenty to look at without needing a theme-park attention span. Adults who like asking questions will get more from it than adults seeking a polished wildlife centre. There is a small spot for cool drinks and simple food after the walk.
Butterflies are part of the story, though the rescued animals and the working farm give the place its character. The otter remains the undisputed local celebrity, which is a difficult title to win against guinea pigs resembling tiny, grumpy potatoes.
