Description

Bamboo bridges, steep ladders and one very narrow crawl turn Tham Khao Mai Khew into Koh Lanta’s proper muddy cave outing. The route starts with a jungle climb through rough, damp ground, then drops into a big, unlit cave system with bats, crickets and spiders on the walls.

A headlamp and local guide are part of the trip, which matters once the chambers begin joining up in the dark. The cave gets hotter and wetter the deeper it goes, and the final squeeze demands flat-on-your-belly commitment. Flip-flops are optimistic footwear here, in the same way a paper umbrella is ambitious engineering.

Wear trainers or strapped sandals, old clothes and bring water. Hands, knees and shoes will collect mud; that is the admission fee paid to geology. The ladders, slick rocks and tight passages make this a poor pick for anyone who dislikes confined spaces or struggles with climbing.

The short waterfall on the approach is a pleasant extra, though the cave is the point. Tham Khao Mai Khew delivers the raw version of cave exploring: no installed lighting, no paved walkway, and bats circling above the final chambers.
