The Houben Hotel
Description
The red pool, cliff-edge sunsets and private terrace whirlpools are the headline here. The Houben has 15 rooms, so it feels more like a well-kept coastal house than a resort built around wristbands and breakfast queues.
Book a higher-floor room or a villa if the sea view matters to you. Lower-level rooms sit close to the pool, while the upper floors look over the red water and the Andaman properly. Rooms are large, bright and air-conditioned, with outsized beds and balconies built for doing very little successfully.
Breakfast is cooked to order. The restaurant holds its own for lunch and dinner too, especially cocktails at sunset and a slow meal after the heat drops.
Kantiang Bay is quiet, southern and comfortably removed from Saladan’s bustle. Restaurants, the beach, a 7-Eleven and bars are walkable, but a scooter or tuk-tuk is needed for wider island exploring. Parts of the property show their age, yet the views from the upper terraces remain absurdly effective.
