Description
Fine pale sand runs for kilometres at Phra Ae, with enough room to claim a patch without playing towel Tetris. The middle section has a clear, sandy bottom and proper swimming depth, even around low tide.
The north and central stretches are for long swims, barefoot walks and sunset watching. Keep an eye out for jellyfish before getting in, especially later in the day. The sea floor drops away quickly in parts, so small children need close supervision.
Rocks and coral closer to shore create a small snorkelling zone, with needlefish, sea cucumbers and other bits moving about beneath the surface. It is beginner-friendly in shallow water, though the reef is not a reason to leave your mask at home and declare yourself Jacques Cousteau.
Beach bars, Thai restaurants and massage huts are scattered along the sand without swallowing the whole coastline. Thai Cat is a solid stop for a meal, while the southern end is handy for boat departures to Koh Rok and the Four Islands. Access often runs down sandy dirt tracks from the main road, so sunset footwear should survive more than one puddle.
