Description
Live bait, then trolling off a longtail – that is the whole operation, and it is far more fun than staring at a rod on a giant tour boat. Queenfish, barracuda, tuna, king mackerel, dorado and grouper turn up, with plenty of small baitfish to keep children busy between the serious pulls.
Boon runs the fishing with a proper feel for the water, changing drift and ground. The gear is basic, so keen anglers with encyclopaedic reel opinions should bring their own setup; everyone else can get on with catching fish.
The boat has an awning, space to lie down, drinks, fruit and food, plus hotel pickup by arrangement. Sea conditions can get lumpy, and the ride out is not kind to delicate stomachs – pack tablets and keep your phone in a dry bag.
A decent catch deserves the beach restaurant treatment. Take a queenfish or barracuda ashore for garlic butter or panang curry, with rice, and turn the afternoon into lunch and dinner in one go. Nothing on Koh Lanta makes a fish supper feel more deserved than having watched it make several determined attempts to escape it.
