The Angels Restaurant
Description
Khao soi is the thing to pin your evening on here: deep curry broth, proper spice, and enough noodles to make a sensible adult briefly overestimate their capacity. The fish panang curry, tom kha and yellow curry carry the same full-bodied approach, not the diluted island version that tastes faintly of coconut-related paperwork.
Everything can be made vegan, including the drunken noodles, laab and khao soi. Vegetable tempura and spring rolls are serious contenders for the opening act, while the chicken sandwich and beef burger cover the rare occasion someone in your group has temporarily lost faith in Thai food.
The room is small, with a few communal picnic tables, fans, rock music, vintage band T-shirts and walls busy with notes and odd little objects. It feels more like eating in the kitchen of a music-loving friend than a polished restaurant, which is exactly the point.
Food is cooked from scratch by a two-person operation, so a packed room means a long wait. Arrive without a tight schedule, settle in with a coconut shake or mango mojito, and let the kitchen get on with it.
