Basil Bistro
Description
Crispy chicken Panang curry is the plate to start with: fried chicken breast, curry vegetables and rice, with enough crunch to justify the return visit. The crispy pork with chilli and salt is equally serious, while fish sauce fried pork and pork meatballs put the kitchen firmly on the side of pork enthusiasts.
Boat noodles arrive dark, rich and deeply flavoured. Tom yum seafood brings proper heat, and the fermented fish papaya salad has the pungent, fiery edge it should. Portions are generous, so ordering three mains for two hungry adults is optimism with a menu.
The food has a slightly polished spin without losing Thai street-food punch. Chicken with cashews, massaman, green curry and yellow curry all hold up, while summer rolls and smoothies cover the less carnivorous gaps. Vegetarian versions of many dishes are available, and breakfast can be adapted for strict low-carb eating.
Seating spills between outdoor tables and a cosy upstairs area. Dinner gets busy and dishes can take time when the room fills, so settle in with a cold beer. The 15-minute scooter ride is justified by that crispy chicken Panang alone.
