Description
Deep-fried snapper under tamarind sauce is the order here, with sharp-sweet sauce, crisp fish and the sort of freshness Old Town restaurants charge extra for. The spicy seafood salad and fried rice are solid too, but fish is why the kitchen matters.
Three rooms sit on stilts above the water at the quieter end of Lanta Old Town. Front rooms put the sea straight outside the bed, with mangroves and mudflats replacing the postcard view at low tide. It is a tidal coastline, not a screensaver.
The rooms are large, clean and simple, with air conditioning, comfortable beds and breakfast. Bicycle parking is secure, and Old Town is close enough to explore on two wheels without turning the outing into a Tour de France stage.
Chomlay fits budget-minded seafood eaters, solo travellers and anyone who prefers fishing-village calm over the west-coast bar circuit. The restaurant feels most rewarding at high tide, when the terrace looks across water.
