Description
Massaman beef, seafood ho mok and crab fish cakes are the reasons to stop at Shine Talay, not merely the long row of wooden tables over Old Town’s water. The kitchen handles rich southern-style curries and seafood without reducing either to a postcard prop. White snapper, prawns, squid and green mango salad all belong on the serious side of the menu.
The old wooden stilt house has covered open-air seating and a waterside deck, with the bay doing its best work around sunset. A swing set sits beside the restaurant, which is useful if small humans have reached the stage where chairs are an insult. After dark, the view turns to fishing lights and stars over the water.
Thai food gets the strongest hand here. Try the tom yum rice for full tom yum flavour without committing to a bowl of soup, or go for nam prik with crisp cucumber and long beans. The deep-fried morning glory salad has enough crunch to justify its existence, and mango sticky rice finishes dinner properly.
Western dishes, coffee and cocktails fill out the menu, but Old Town has plenty of places willing to sell you a generic plate of something. Sit at the back by the water and let the curries, seafood and timber-and-tide setting do the talking.
