Panorama Oceanfront Restaurant
Description
The shrimp omelette arrives crisp at the edges, the squid fried rice has proper bite, and the sea below looks across to the little islands off Koh Lanta’s east coast. Panorama is the lunch stop to pin between Old Town and Pirate Beach, with a terrace view that makes a coffee break suspiciously hard to finish.
Fish cakes, seafood rice, basil chicken and the mackerel special are the food to take seriously here. Mango sticky rice and chocolate cake handle the sweet end, while the espresso and Jiaogulan tea are far better than a roadside stop has any right to offer. Cold beer comes in chilled glasses, because civilisation has not entirely collapsed.
The upstairs dining area has a small dumb-waiter bringing plates up from the kitchen, which gives lunch a pleasingly low-tech bit of theatre. Fresh ingredients and reduced plastic use are part of the place’s character, not a slogan pasted onto a bamboo sign.
Set aside time for the view. The terrace is the point: islands on the horizon, a slow meal, and piano jazz drifting around while the east-coast road carries on without you.
