Kienglay Seafood
Description
White snapper on the barbecue and Thai-spiced tiger prawns are the proper reason to stop at Kienglay Seafood. The kitchen keeps the grill work simple, then lets three dipping sauces do the talking: garlic-black-pepper butter, chilli fish sauce, and a sharper chilli number with enough bite to wake a ferry passenger.
The waterfront tables sit right over the water in Saladan, with a fan at each one. Pick a seat facing the harbour, order a fresh coconut or smoothie, and let dinner take its time. Mosquitoes join the evening shift, so cover up or bring repellent.
Seafood comes by weight, which is excellent news for a serious appetite and less delightful for anyone treating the menu as abstract fiction. The grilled king mackerel, whole calamari, BBQ fish, coconut seafood curry, and fried noodles all deserve attention. Ask for Thai-style spice if bland food has been your recent holiday companion.
The menu sprawls beyond the grill into curries, Pad Thai, duck curry, Hot Pan dishes, pizzas, and a surprisingly solid garlic bread. Kienglay’s sweet spot is a long, unhurried seafood dinner beside the water, particularly after Saladan has stopped pretending it needs another generic café.
