Chef Chalong
Description
Grilled pork neck, shrimp cakes the size of a small palm, and tom yum fried rice with seafood are the proper reasons to stop at Chef Chalong. The Thai and Isaan side of the menu has far more punch than the Western detours, so leave the spaghetti bolognese for a rainy-day emergency.
Papaya salad arrives with proper heat available, and the kitchen asks how far you want to take it. Say spicy only if you mean spicy; Koh Lanta’s chillies do not issue diplomatic warnings. Tom yum goong, seafood salad, pineapple rice and green curry all hold their own, while fried fish in tamarind sauce gives larger tables something worth sharing.
The restaurant sits opposite Twin Lotus near Saladan, with plenty of seating and a relaxed family-run feel. Portions are generous enough to turn a couple of dishes into lunch for two, especially the fried rice and shrimp pancakes.
Nudi, the Shih Tzu, often occupies the managerial position near the table. Chef Chalong is for Foodies, hungry Budget travellers, and anyone who would rather eat Isaan pork neck than another timid plate of pad thai.
