Seagull Kitchen
Description
Pineapple fried rice arrives in its shell, loaded with shrimp, cashews and sweet fruit, which is exactly the level of unnecessary theatre fried rice deserves. Seagull Kitchen’s Thai food has far more range than the roadside setting suggests: pad Thai, green curry, massaman, panaeng, pad cha and tom kha gai all land with proper spice and depth.
Fresh snapper and sea prawns are the better bet for a seafood dinner, while the vegetable spring rolls and summer rolls work well beside a cold mango or passion-fruit shake. Add prik nam pla to the table and use it carefully; it has the quiet confidence of something that has ruined many a bland holiday meal.
Breakfast is not an afterthought here. Thai rice soup, mango pancakes, coffee, and the full English and American plates cover the early start without forcing anyone into curry before sunrise. The air-conditioned room is useful in the daytime, while the breezier roadside seats suit dinner around twilight.
The menu also handles cravings from elsewhere: spaghetti bolognese, schnitzel, crispy pork, Caesar salad and chocolate brownie all have a place. This is the rare all-day stop where a group can split between duck curry, grilled fish and pasta without anyone eating the compromise option.
