Mr. Green
Description
Crispy pork with red curry sauce is the plate that explains Mr. Green in one hit: salty, spicy, properly rich, and built for rice. The air-dried fried Thai beef, pad gra pow, hot tofu seaweed soup, and Thai omelette keep the late-night table busy long after most Long Beach kitchens have packed up.
The Thai side of the giant menu deserves your attention. Green curry has real depth, noodle soup is comforting, and fried yellow noodles with beef land well. Portions run modest, so order a couple of dishes between two and avoid pretending one plate will settle a midnight appetite.
Mr. Green sits on the main road and looks plain enough to drive past, which would be a mistake made by many excellent stomachs. Plastic-chair Thai food, cold beer, capable cocktails, and a kitchen turning out dishes from scratch – no chandelier has ever improved red curry anyway.
The Italian detour is not why you are here. Stick to Thai cooking, arrive with time to spare, and let the pork, soups, curries, and fried dishes do their noisy little miracle.
