Description

The Thai-style som tam lands with the right snap, heat and lime, backed by fresh vegetables that still taste like vegetables. That alone puts Nueng Som Tam ahead of plenty of bigger menus on Koh Lanta.

Clear tom yum goong is the other reason to stop: a bright herb-heavy broth, fat sweet prawns and none of that murky, overworked soup business. The green curry comes generously loaded with prawns too, while duck salad and crispy-skinned chicken give the table some useful territory beyond papaya salad.

It is a compact Isaan place with a short menu, eat-in tables and takeaway covered. The room is clean, simple and focused on getting spicy food out quickly, which is a sound use of everybody’s afternoon.

Lunch suits a quick bowl of tom yum and a salad; dinner has enough range for a proper shared meal. Settle in around the som tam first – it is the dish that explains why this little spot keeps pulling repeat visits.
