Tamarind Lanta
Description
Tai O-style shrimp paste rice is the plate to chase here: salty, funky shrimp paste, rice and side dishes with enough bite to wake up a beach-holiday palate. Fried rice with tender shrimp is the quieter choice, while the omelette with rice and satay handles a substantial breakfast without requiring a second breakfast later.
Thai cooking carries more character than the generic resort-cafe staples, though the English breakfast comes with fruit and does its job for anyone temporarily defeated by chilli. Iced coffee and cheap shakes keep the bill sensible. The breakfast selection now leans on set egg-and-bread combinations, so porridge devotees need to adjust their plans.
The restaurant sits back from the road near the beach, away from the scooter soundtrack that accompanies much of Lanta’s morning dining. It is a small open-air room, better for a long coffee and an unhurried lunch than an evening meal. Mosquitoes join the seating plan after dark, with the confidence of creatures that have never paid rent.
Sanfa adds some proper warmth to the place, and the pool beside the restaurant makes it easy to stretch breakfast into a slow resort morning. Tamarind Lanta earns repeat visits for the shrimp paste rice, iced coffee and quiet roadside-free tables.
