Lek Lek
Description
The pad Thai at Lek Lek has the right balance of tamarind, peanut and wok char, without that odd sweet tomato drift found elsewhere on the island. Add a mango shake and you have lunch sorted before the road traffic can audition for a percussion band.
Penang curry, red curry and yellow noodles carry the same full-flavour approach. Beef basil rice with a fried egg is a solid, quick plate, while the papaya salad brings enough sharp heat to wake up a motorbike helmet. Portions are generous, so this is not the place for a dainty snack followed by a second lunch.
Coffee is unusually good for a small roadside Thai kitchen, especially the iced cappuccino. Fresh fruit plates, mango sticky rice and fried bananas cover the useful gap between a proper meal and an afternoon sugar requirement.
The setting is simple outdoor seating beside the road, with no sea view and no polished beach-club theatre. Lek Lek wins on food that arrives fast, tastes like someone cared, and leaves enough baht for another shake tomorrow.
