Duang-Kaew Restaurant
Description
Pineapple fried rice is the plate to back here, properly savoury and far better than its decorative fruit-bowl cousins. Fried pineapple, spring rolls and mango sticky rice also earn their place, which is an impressive amount of fruit-based competence for one roadside Thai restaurant.
The menu sticks to Thai classics: tom yum, yellow curry, seafood with basil, morning glory, sweet-and-sour chicken and stir-fries. Seafood arrives well cooked, rice comes with mains, and the watermelon “smoothie” is more of a straight watermelon juice – a sensible outcome in this heat.
Duang-Kaew is cheap, colourful and family-run, with lanterns, wind chimes and wooden carvings overhead. There are games at the tables, banana pancakes and Thai iced coffee for breakfast, and enough vegetarian flexibility to handle meat-free pineapple rice or vegan meals without turning lunch into a crossword puzzle.
Ask for proper spice in curries, tom yum and tom kha. The default heat is restrained, while the kitchen’s spicy version puts the chilli back where it belongs.
