Janah Restaurant
Description
Three-flavoured fish and mango sticky rice are the reasons to pull up a plastic chair at Janah. The fish brings sweet, sour and chilli heat in the proper Thai collision, while the sticky rice finishes with enough coconut richness to ruin lesser desserts for you.
Portions land generously for an inexpensive roadside restaurant. Pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, seafood fried rice and pepper chicken stir-fry cover the familiar comfort-food end of the menu, with fruit shakes doing useful work in Koh Lanta’s heat.
The room is small, simple and close to the main road, built for eating. Families run the place with a relaxed warmth, and a cup of fruit after the meal is part of the charm (proof that civilisation has not entirely collapsed).
Vegetarians have stir-fried vegetables and Thai dishes that can be kept meat-free. Takeaway suits the roadside setting, though eating in is where the three-flavoured fish deserves to be tackled – hot, saucy and with rice ready to catch the runoff.
