Rohanee Restaurant
Description
Massaman curry is the order here: deep, savoury, properly sauced, and available mild for anyone whose relationship with chilli has become complicated. The green curry deserves equal attention, while the panaeng carries the richer, peanutty end of the menu.
Rohanee is a tiny family kitchen with Nuseeha cooking the lot, so food arrives at the pace of one capable person and several hungry tables. Settle in, drink the free water, and leave the stopwatch in your room. The Thai omelette with shrimp is generously filled without becoming an oil slick, which is a minor miracle in the omelette industry.
Vegetarians have more to do than pick through garnish. Massaman tofu, mixed vegetable stir-fry, vegetable fried rice, khao soi and a separate vegetarian section make this one of the more useful low-cost meals around Saladan.
The room is plain, local and compact, with a cat occasionally supervising proceedings. No alcohol is sold, so save Rohanee for curry, rice and a proper uncomplicated dinner.
