Mama Dang Kitchen
Description
Khao soi carries the flag here – a deep, rich curry broth wrapped around noodles and chicken, with the sort of flavour that makes a second visit feel inevitable. It can sell out, which is irritating only because the bowl deserves its little victory lap.
Massaman curry is another serious order, thick with spice and made for a mound of rice. The chili-basil chicken has proper heat and punch, while Hang Lay curry brings a harder-to-find northern option to a menu that avoids becoming a telephone directory.
Pad Thai, satay chicken, morning glory and shrimp spring rolls cover the familiar Thai staples without drifting into holiday-food beige. Mango sticky rice is rich enough to share, though the portions elsewhere are already generous. Pineapple fried rice is pleasant but less forceful than the curries and noodle dishes.
The room is small, simple and busy at dinner, with plastic chairs and no interest in pretending to be a beach club. Cash only. Gluten-free Pad Thai is available, making this a strong inexpensive stop for food-focused eaters who want Thai cooking with some muscle behind it.
