Sweetsoul Lanta
Description
Massaman curry arrives loaded with pineapple, pumpkin, sweet potato, snap peas and battered tofu, all under a sauce with enough spice to stop it becoming nursery food. It is the order here, along with the fried noodles with vegetables, tempeh and satay sauce.
SweetSoul puts a fully vegetarian menu directly on the beach, with vegan dishes clearly marked and tempeh appearing in more than one useful place. The pad Thai, crisp spring rolls, papaya salad and pineapple fried rice give meat-free Thai food proper weight, not the usual sad negotiation with a pile of mushrooms.
Settle into the retro 70s and 80s music, cushions and hammocks before sunset, then stay for coconut ice cream or mango sticky rice. Garlic flatbread, cauliflower bites and hummus cover the snackier end of the menu without turning dinner into a lentil seminar.
The beach-facing seats go first around sunset, and the cocktails lag behind the kitchen. Wine drinkers have a compact, well-chosen list, including German bottles, which is an unexpectedly civilised thing to find beside the sand.
