Description
Fried morning glory, Isan dishes and a hot pot give Bananaway more bite than the usual Klong Khong roadside menu. The seafood salad, papaya salad and garlic-black-pepper chicken over rice are proper lunch choices, with herbs coming straight from the garden.
Green curry with tofu lands well, and the kitchen handles vegan versions across the menu. Start the day with the Thai stuffed omelette, then abandon restraint for a cappuccino shake or banana shake. Both are far more useful than they have any right to be in jungle heat.
The setting is a wooden house in the greenery opposite Klong Khong Beach, marked by enormous lion carvings. It has the loose, lived-in feel of a place where dinner can stretch longer than planned – a rare achievement for a building with decorative lions guarding the approach.
Bananaway also has small dorm accommodation, including a six-bed room with a wide jungle view. The island sits within scooter range from here, while the restaurant itself is strongest for Foodies and Vegetarian friendly eaters who want Thai cooking with Isan edges.
